Getting Started At Indy Foreign Language Academy, we understand that finding the best way to learn a new language can be confusing. Once you have decided what language you want to study, there are still many steps to take in determining the best method of learning for you individual lifestyle and personality. All new students are encouraged to contact our Director prior to enrollment in any class to discuss their options and determine the best path of study. Students who have previously studied a language are offered a free evaluation before they enroll in any course or private classes in order to make sure the course of study will be well-suited to their current language skills. One of the most important steps in beginning your language learning experience is deciding what type of instruction is best suited to you. To do this, ask yourself some important questions, such as: Do I learn well in a group setting? If you answer yes, then group instruction may work well for you. If you remember spending a lot of time in school staring out the window, you may be better suited for individual (one-on-one) study. How much individual attention do I want? If you want to make sure your classes are tailored to your specific needs, then you should consider private classes. If you prefer the idea of learning along with a group of others, then group classes may be a better choice. How much time do I want to spend in class each week? Our public group classes meet once a week for 1.5 hours. Students who are looking to study 2+ hours per week may want to consider private classes to help them meet this requirement. How quickly do I want to complete my studies? If you want to learn as much of the language as quickly as possible, consider immersion classes. An immersion course is intensive individual lessons, designed to surround the student with the new language for 7.5 hours per day. Do I tend to procrastinate? If you procrastinate, on-line instruction is not for you. Unlike traditional live instruction, it allows a student to easily avoid the classes for a long period of time. How do I plan to use this language? Our group classes work well for students who plan to use the target language for general conversational purposes. However, if you need specific terminology to help you do your job, a customized private or immersion class may be better suited to your needs. To discuss your goals and the various options we offer, or to schedule an evaluation, please contact us.
